Siemens Mobility and Deutsche Bahn have commenced passenger trials of their hydrogen-powered train, the Mireo Plus H, on regional routes in Bavaria, Germany. The project aims to evaluate the train's performance and operational viability as a sustainable alternative to diesel locomotives on non-electrified lines.

The Mireo Plus H is equipped with a hydrogen fuel cell system and lithium-ion batteries, enabling emission-free travel with a range of up to 800 kilometers. The trial is supported by the Bavarian State Ministry for Economic Affairs, Regional Development and Energy, reflecting Germany's commitment to decarbonizing rail transport.

Hydrogen trains are considered a promising solution for reducing greenhouse gas emissions in regions where electrification is not economically feasible. The results of this pilot will inform future deployment strategies for hydrogen-powered rail across Europe.
